Curriculum Intent

At Cottingley Village Primary School, we aim to create fun, exciting PE sessions.  We understand the importance of physical activity as a lifelong skill and a habit that can be taken from primary school and stay with children throughout their lives. Physical Education will provide opportunities for pupils to become  confident in a way which supports their health and fitness.

Our intention is for PE to be based on the knowledge and skills, as set out in the National Curriculum and the EYFS Early Learning Goals.  Our curriculum is designed to cater for the children we teach.  The children will learn the basic skills of PE and there is a strong emphasis on collaboration. Our school motto is ‘Together we will succeed’ and this is reflected in our PE curriculum.  Throughout the year, children will be given the opportunity to participate in activities which enable them to collaborate. Children need to be supportive in helping one another achieve in PE and when they are evaluating performance, they are encouraged to use the given PE vocabulary to support this.


Each child receives PE which is carefully planned and mapped out to ensure a broad and full range of skills and activities. This is covered through the key areas of ball skills, bat and ball skills, gymnastics, dance and athletics. Each unit is taught as a half-termly block.  These sessions are delivered by class teachers during PE lessons.

The long-term plans are skills based with very specific goals for children to achieve.  This gives the teacher clarity of where a child in their class has come from, where they should be by the end of the unit and how they know a child has exceeded. It is planned progressively through to the KS2 National curriculum end goals.  Learning organisers support teachers to plan and deliver progressive lessons across school.

Our lessons are designed and delivered to enable all children to:

  • have fun and experience success in sport
  • participate in P.E at their own level of development
  • feel secure and build on a range of skills
  • develop good sporting attitudes
  • understand basic rules (particularly the rules of games and importance of fair play)
  • experience positive competition
  • learn in a safe environment

Cross Curricular Links

Wherever possible, meaningful links are made to other areas of the curriculum.  For instance, dance in each links to the theme taught. Links with Maths and Science are also made on a regular basis, wherever possible.

Children in Year 5 attend swimming lessons at Shipley swimming pool, where they are taught to swim competently and confidently over a distance of 25 metres, using a range of strokes.

In addition to PE in curriculum time, we strive to provide a broad range of opportunities for children to access extracurricular physical activity through a wide range of sporting and active clubs throughout the school day.

Enrichment Opportunities

 The PE curriculum is enriched in a variety of ways:

  • Throughout the week, children participate in Active Breaks to improve their well-being. Active breaks are intended to help the children to switch off from their classroom learning; this may come in the form of running the Daily Mile, dance or a bit of classroom yoga. 
  • At lunchtime, there are fun, exciting, and often competitive lunchtime sports sessions delivered by highly trained sports professionals.
  • Our Year 6 children learn to be Sports Leaders and deliver their own physical activities with the younger children.
  • We hold fun, exciting and competitive ‘Ball Skills’ sessions on Monday afternoon.
  • We run a variety of afterschool sports clubs on a Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.
  • Outdoor and adventurous activities – for children from Year Two to Year Six, through ‘residential breaks’ at a range of outdoor activity centres from Whitby to the Lake District.
  • The children can take part in competitions throughout the school year against other local schools. We enter a variety of school sports competitions, including cross country, football and the Brownlee Trust’s triathlon.
  • Participation is always celebrated in whole school assemblies and through our ‘Sporting Heroes’ display
