The Learning Challenge Curriculum
Cottingley Village Primary School has created a ‘Learning Challenge Curriculum’, using the statutory requirements of the new 2014 curriculum and adapted them to match the needs and interests of our children, equipping them with the necessary skills to succeed in the 21st century. A question centred, themed approach to learning promotes curiosity and independence, develops enquiry and deepens thinking, ensuring that all children progress to the best of their ability. ‘Building Learning Power’ promotes the positive attitudes, behaviours and habits that children need to become resilient lifelong learners.
Maths and English are taught as standalone subjects, however, high quality texts and ‘Writing Missions’ enhance the current learning challenge. Children apply their reading, writing and mathematical skills across the Learning Challenges with high expectations set in the basic skills of spelling, presentation and communication are core in everything the children do.
Children are involved in shaping the planning of the learning, whilst ‘WoW’ experiences engage and hook them into the ‘Challenge’. Through reflection, at the end of a challenge, children are encouraged to assess their progress in learning and identify their next steps. This creates a self improving, reflective culture across the school which the children fully engage in.

A more detailed version for each year group provides specifically focused objectives and expectations for English and Maths, and all other subjects, key skills are highlighted for each challenge. Some of the challenges are more in depth than others and as the curriculum is develops, we are constantly evaluating, reviewing, adapting and updating, so that we achieve the best outcomes possible for our children.

An overview of the end of Year Group Expectations for Reading, Writing and Maths are provided below:
Cottingley Village Primary School aims to equip children with a love of reading so that reading is fluent, uses key skills to deduce, infer and comprehend and research for information, which is as important as reading for pleasure and enjoyment.
Reading start with development of synthetic phonics programme, as soon as they enter Nursery (Letters and Sounds – see Parents’ Information – ‘Helping your child with phonics’), children are taught a wide range of decoding strategies, as well as how to develop appropriate tone, pace and volume (see Parents’ Information – ‘Helping your child to read’)
Children are encouraged to read, developing and consolidating their skills, through a range of challenging texts and develop a love of reading through scheme books that are backed up appealing ‘free reading books’ . These cover all levels and are from a wide range of authors to suit all reading tastes. The teaching of reading is threaded through the curriculum and includes:
- Immersing children in high quality whole texts during English lessons.
- Guided reading.
- Individual reading.
- Reading across the learning challenges.
- Library sessions.
- Come and Read (weekly sessions where parents are encouraged to come into school and read with their child).
Children are set ‘Writing Missions’ linked to the current learning challenge they have which are based on high quality texts. The ‘Missions’ involve writing for a real purpose and audience and the children publish their final outcomes in a range of forms from class diaries and crime reports to E-books and on-line book reviews. Through this approach, our children develop enthusiasm and positive attitudes towards writing, using the skills of planning, drafting and editing. Structured teaching of vocabulary, spelling, grammar and punctuation further support this.
The teaching of maths is based on the National Curriculum and is supported by the School’s Calculations Policy. We aim to provide children with the skills to become confident problem solvers, and have the ability to reason in a logical way through real-life contexts.

Cottingley Village Primary School follows the Bradford agreed syllabus for Religious Education. Children are expected to learn about a breadth of religious practices and beliefs. Throughout the school they will learn about and from six major religions: Islam, Christianity, Hinduism, Judaism, Sikhism and Buddhism. The school has strong links in the local community with St Michael & All Saints Church at Cottingley Cornerstones.
PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education)
PSHE and Citizenship are central to our curriculum. Some themes such as Relationships and E-Safety are explicitly taught and matched to the needs of the children. PSHE is a core value to the school and it is implicitly threaded through the learning challenges and is central to the school day eg. through the work of the School Council, Digital Leaders, Junior First Aiders and the school’s ‘Buddy’ system.
We strive for equal opportunities and the teaching of British Values (democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs), together with the development of the Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural understanding of our children underpins every aspect of the curriculum, school life and assemblies.
French is taught in Key Stage 2 from Year 3 upwards.
Is taught throughout the school by a PE specialist. The focus is on developing a healthy lifestyle, cooperation and teamwork. The school has a range of competitive sports and after school clubs, which enable all children to use their sporting expertise in a variety of ways
